FC Dallas wins, 2-0, in front of 18,172 fans at Toyota Stadium

FRISCO, Texas (Saturday, Aug. 29) – FC Dallas’ (12-8-5, 42 points) Tesho Akindele and Fabian Castillo found the Logo FC Dallas 1600x1600back of the net, while Mexican Under-20 National Team goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez secured the first clean sheet of his career to lead the home side to a 2-0 victory in front of 18,172 fans tonight at Toyota Stadium.

Needing three points at home, FC Dallas came out firing and created five scoring chances in the opening six minutes of the match. The best came in the first minute, when Je-Vaughn Watson came forward from his position at right back and crossed a dangerous ball into the area. Real Salt Lake won the initial header but could not clear the ball away, opening the door for David Texeira. The 23-year-old forward claimed the loose ball and ripped a hard shot from close range, but the right-footed blast sailed wide of the near post.

Real Salt Lake weathered the storm and got its first chance on goal in the 18th minute, when Javier Morales broke through on the right side and drew the attention of the FC Dallas defense before crossing the ball to Joao Plata at the back post. Plata would have had a wide-open look on goal if not for the closing speed of Plano native Kellyn Acosta. The 20-year-old midfielder read the pass and stepped in front of Plata to send the ball over the end line for Salt Lake’s first corner kick of the match.

Dallas ended the first half with a nine to seven advantage in shots, but both sides were limited by defenses that allowed just one shot on frame for each side through the first 45 minutes. Accordingly, Dallas went into the locker room with a first-half shutout for the 17th time this season.

Canadian international Akindele tracked down a ball played over the top of the Real Salt Lake defense, cut right around a pair of Salt Lake defenders, and drew a foul in the area to give FC Dallas a penalty kick six minutes after halftime. Akindele stepped up and converted the penalty kick attempt after sending Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando in the wrong direction. The 2014 MLS Rookie of the Year’s fourth goal of the season gave the home side a 1-0 advantage in the 51st minute.

Salt Lake’s Morales fed Juan Martinez a lead pass at the top of the box in the 77th minute. Martinez slammed on the brakes and drew a foul from Acosta in the area to give Real a chance to equalize via a penalty attempt of its own. Homegrown goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez stood his ground against Morales. The 20-year-old didn’t fall for the MLS veteran’s fake, guessed the side Morales was going and forced the midfielder to push his attempt too wide to the goalkeeper’s left side. The shot struck the bar and skipped back across the area to Plata, but the second attempt was well off the mark.

Two minutes later, FC Dallas took a 2-0 lead when Michael Barrios combined with Castillo down the right flank. Castillo feinted right and let the pass roll into space before accelerating past the defender and hammering a hard shot low and hard to the near post.

The goal was Castillo’s ninth this season, which leads the team. The shutout was the first of Gonzalez’s career and the ninth for FC Dallas this season.
