on

Picking up their first Western Athletic Conference win of the season, Seattle University softball (15-23, 1-4 WAC) defeated Grand Canyon (27-13, 2-3 WAC), 3-2, in exciting fashion in game one before dropping game two, 8-0.

In game one, the Redhawks took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an Isabella Geronimo (San Mateo, Calif.) RBI triple, her second of the season, before the ‘Lopes tied it in the third on a Camree Wartman RBI single to center field.

GCU gained a 2-1 advantage in the sixth on a Kendsey Hill RBI double to left center but Rose Saenz (San Gabriel, Calif.) hit a solo homer in the bottom of the frame to tie it once again, 2-2.

With one final opportunity in regulation to break the tie, Erika Rodgers (Glendora, Calif.) would score the winning run on a botched throw home by the ‘Lopes right fielder.

In game two, GCU scored one in the first and would take a 4-0 lead in the second on a three-RBI Wartman triple. The ‘Lopes added to their lead with a run apiece in the third and fourth and a Bianca Boling two-run homer to right center.

Kaylee Ree (Gresham, Ore.), Geronimo, and Bouska each picked up two runs apiece for SU on the day while Alyssa Reuble (Lynnwood, Wash.) picked up the win in the circle.

The Redhawks and ‘Lopes finish the series on Saturday, Apr. 9 in search of a series winner at 2 p.m. at Logan Field.
