QU Women’s Tennis Wins Share of MAAC Regular Season Title with 7-0 Sweep of Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac women’s tennis team clinched at least a share of their third consecutive MAAC Regular Season Championship with a 7-0 win over the Fairfield Stags Tuesday afternoon at the WAC Tennis Courts.

Quinnipiac extended its winning streak to three matches and five of the last six as they improve to 11-10 (6-0 MAAC). Fairfield fell to 2-15 (2-5 MAAC) with the loss in their conference finale. The Bobcats will take on the 4-1 Siena Saints on Saturday, April 23 at 1 PM with a chance to win the MAAC Regular Season Championship outright. Quinnipiac is now 26-0 in league play since joining the MAAC.

Five different Bobcats won two individual matches in the day, highlighted by Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) reaching 97 career wins, just three shy from reaching the 100-career win mark. Sophia Dzulynsky (Miramar, Florida) and Jennifer Lu (Cypress, California) both reached 30 wins this season as Dzulynsky now has 31 followed by Lu’s 30. Dzulynsky also won her 20th doubles match of the season.

Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut) won her 42nd match of the season with two win on the day, tied with Sarah Viebrock ’13 for the eighth most wins in a single season in program history. Proyfon Lohaphaisan (Santa Clarita, California) also continued to win for the Bobcats as she won two matches for her 38th win of the season.

Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta) and Alexandra Mircea (Glen Rock, California) each won two matches for the Bobcats with Mircea’s win going down as he 20th of the season.

Horton and Young opened up the match at No. 1 with a quick 6-0 win over Fairfield’s Nicole Aragones and Sarah Stuhlmann. Shortly after, the Bobcats clinched the doubles point with a win at No. 2 doubles from Lu and Lohaphaisan over Cecilia Parla and Meghan Zimmer, 6-1. Dzulynsky and Oliphant finished off the doubles sweep at No. 3 doubles with a 6-2 win over Courtney Connors and Karen McKeough.

Singles was just as dominant for the Bobcats as Dzulynsky led off with a 6-1, 6-2 straight set win over Aragones. Lu was the next Bobcat done on the day at No. 3 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Zimmer. Lohaphaisan won the clinching match for the Bobcats at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-1, over Connors.  Quinnipiac continued its domination at No. 2 singles as Horton breezed to the 6-1, 6-2 win over McKeough. Young picked up an easy 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles for the Bobcats over Campos  followed by Mircea’s straight set win over Parla at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-2.

The Quinnipiac women’s tennis team will return to the court on Saturday, April 23 at 1 PM with a chance to win the MAAC Regular Season Championship outright when they take on the Siena Saints (9-8, 4-1 MAAC) at Watervliet High School in Watervliet, New York.
