Southern Miss Takes the Win over Mississippi Valley State in Run-Rule Fashion

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss softball team improved to 19-18 overall with a win over Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles recorded a 9-1 run-rule victory over the Devilettes.

In the circle, Kim Crowson earned her seventh victory of the season, tossing 3.0 innings of work against MVSU. The junior did not allow any runs on a single hit with one walk and three strikeouts. Crowson gave way to Danielle Block in the top of the fourth inning. Block allowed one run on two hit in 1.0 inning of work. Jillian Johnson then came in at the top of the fifth and didn’t allow a hit or a run in her 1.0 inning. 

Offensively, the Golden Eagles notched a .444 team batting average, going 8-for-18 with four doubles, two triples, nine runs scored and nine RBI. Chase Nelson and Tori Dew each finished the day with multiple hits. Nelson and Rachel Johnson notched triples, while Jade LewisBailey Stokes and Tori Dew (2) recorded doubles. Dew and Nelson led the way with three runs scored. 

Southern Miss jumped out to an early lead, plating three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Golden Eagles opened the game with a Samantha Reynolds walk. Reynolds then stole second and Dew came up to bat. Dew singled up the middle to score Reynolds. Caitlyn Aldous drew the second walk of the inning to put two runners on, one out. Stokes doubled to left center to score both Dew and Aldous but was stranded on second, the inning ended with Southern Miss up 3-0. 

The Golden Eagles doubled their lead with a three-run second inning. Heather Hill had a lead-off walk and then Rachel Johnson tripled out to right center bringing Hill home. Reynolds then launched a sac fly to bring Johnson home and extend the lead, 5-0. Chase Nelson had her first triple of the season and was brought home by a ground out from Holifield. Tori Dew hit her second double of the night but was stranded after a quick ground out ended the inning, 6-0. 

Mississippi Valley State chipped into the lead in the top of the fourth inning. The lead-off batter, Jordan Brown, doubled to right center and was brought in by another Devilette double. The Golden Eagles defense kept it to just the one run leaving the score, 6-1, headed into the bottom. 

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Selena Estrada, in to hit for Reynolds, drew another lead-off walk before Nelson singled up the middle. Both Nelson and Estrada stole bases advancing them to second and third. Lewis doubled to the right center bringing both Estrada and Nelson over the dish and extend the lead 8-1. Dew hit another double, her second of the night, bringing home Reagen Jacobs, who pinch ran for Lewis. 

Jillian Johnson and the defense secured the win in the top of the fifth with a pop up, a ground out and a strike out. Final score, 9-1, Southern Miss
