CCSU Women’s Lacrosse Falls in Overtime to LIU Brooklyn in Season Finale


The Central Connecticut women’s lacrosse team was defeated, 6-5, in overtime at LIU Brooklyn in the season finale. The Blue Devils finish the season 3-13 overall and 2-5 in the Northeast Conference.

LIU Brooklyn took a quick 1-0 lead at the 29:48 mark of the opening half. The Blue Devils answered back with two goals to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.

Senior Madison Hughes opened the scoring for Central with an unassisted goal at the 26:53 mark to make it 1-1. Senior Elyse Malecki would give the Blue Devils the lead when she scored off a pass from freshman Jenna Henningsen at the 17:39 mark of the first period to make it 2-1.

The Blackbirds retook the lead early in the second half, scoring three goals in the opening four minutes to make it 4-2. CCSU would rally back scoring three unanswered goals to retake the lead.

Senior Falynn McCartney scored, unassisted, with 21:50 to play to make it 4-3. Junior Marissa Soto would tie the game up, scoring with 11:43 to play off an assist from McCartney to make it 4-4.

The Blue Devils took the lead with just over five minutes to play when sophomore Kylie Sullivan scored on a solo effort to make it 5-4.

Tori Shinkowitz would score with 3:04 remaining, notching her third goal of the game for LIU, to tie the game 5-5 and send it to overtime. In the extra period, Jenn Peters scored with 1:23 remaining to give LIU a 6-5 win.

Freshman Jackie Branthover made seven saves for the Blue Devils and classmate Diana Lenares made four stops.

LIU Brooklyn held a 25-20 edge in shots, while both teams each had 17 turnovers. The Blue Devils had 18 ground balls to 24 for LIU Brooklyn.
