AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl Features Kansas State vs. Texas A&M

The 2016 AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl will pit the SEC’s Texas A&M Aggies against the Big 12’s Kansas State Wildcats, in a contest scheduled for Wednesday, December 28, with kickoff at 9 p.m. EST. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN and ESPN Radio. It will be the 11th edition of the Texas Bowl game in Houston.

K-State (8-4, 6-3 in Big 12) heads into bowl season as one of the hottest teams in college football, winning five of its last six games, including the final three. Texas A&M (8-4, 4-4 in SEC) will be seeking to snap a three-game losing streak to the Wildcats, with the most recent loss during the 2011 season.

Fifth-year Aggie head coach Kevin Sumlin will be pursuing his fourth bowl victory, which would be the most in program history for any head coach. He is currently tied with R.C. Slocum, who won three from 1989-2002.

With 8.5 sacks and 15.0 tackles for loss, All-American defensive end Myles Garrett could be considered A&M’s key player. Nevertheless, quarterback Trevor Knight’s 594 rushing yards this season makes him an important weapon for the Aggies.

Sumlin reported that Knight is still being evaluated for his leg injury sustained during the November 24th game against LSU. However, knowledgeable sources reveal that Knight will be playing in the bowl game.

Wildcat quarterback Jesse Ertz heads into the bowl season as the fifth-leading rusher among FBS quarterbacks, while three different running backs (Charles Jones, Alex Barnes and Justin Silmon) hit the 100-yard mark in a game this season.

On defense, turnovers and stopping the run were the emphasis, and the Cats excelled at both. They enter the bowl game ranked 12th nationally in rush defense (112.6 ypg).

The matchup in this year’s Texas Bowl is unique, since the Wildcats will face a former conference foe in Texas A&M, which competed in the Big 12 from 1996 to 2011. The last meeting between the teams as Big 12 members was a classic, as 14th-ranked K-State earned a 53-50 victory in four overtimes on November 12, 2011, in Manhattan.

Prediction: Kansas State 31 – Texas A&M 27
