The Wisconsin wrestling team has both NCAA qualifying wrestlers still in contention after the first day of competition at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in St. Louis, Mo.
Senior Ben Jordan and redshirt sophomore Cole Tobin both lost their first round matchups, but redeemed themselves with victories in the first round of consolation.
Jordan advanced to the next round of wrestlebacks with a 3-1 decision over Old Dominion's Tristan Warner at 165 lbs. Jordan lost his first round match to Wyoming's No. 2 seed Shane Onufer by a 4-1 decision at 165 lbs., knocking him down to the consolation bracket. Jordan faces Iowa’s No. 5 seed Mike Evans on Friday morning.
Tobin also advances to the next round of consolation after defeating Kent State’s Brendan Barlow by a 3-1 sudden victory decision. Tobin dropped his first match to Ohio's No. 7 seed Jeremy Johnson by a 5-0 decision at heavyweight. Tobin takes on West Virginia’s Brandon Williamson on Friday morning.
