Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers Lose to Casey Patterson and Ryan Doherty
May 20, 2012(Baltimore, MD) – 10th seeded Ryan Doherty and Casey Patterson defeated top-seeded 2008 Olympic Gold Medalists Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers 23-21, 19-21, and 15-13 in the finals at The National Volleball League Baltimore Preakness Open.
The upset, a career open win for Doherty and a third for Patterson was part of a two day $50,000 tournament, held in Baltimore, MD in conjunction with the Preakness Stakes and is the only domestic event for Dalhausser and Rogers prior to the London Games.
"I want to congratulate Casey and Ryan," said Rogers. "Ryan is coming up fast on the scene and we expect a lot of things from our next big guy. Phil and I have two months left to build up and defend our title."
"I wish I had better words to describe this win," said Doherty. "Amazing doesn't quite describe it."
Says Patterson, “I could eat the volleyball, that's how unreal it feels. I feel like we can stop at never now!"
Doherty and Patterson plan to use the next four years to prepare for the Olympics in Rio.
London Olympians and top-seeded Jen Kessy and April Ross defeated 2nd-seeded Jenny Kropp and Whitney Pavlik 21-13, 21-16. It was the 24th career open win for Kessy, the 21st for Ross and their 21st together.
