Women Knock off UMass as Records FallJanuary 20, 2012
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Junior Casey Ostrander (Yarmouthport, Mass.) won three events and 18 pool records fell as the Bryant University men's swimming and women's swimming and diving teams split with visiting University of Massachusetts Friday night at the Chace Athletic Center Pool.
Behind Ostrander's three victories, and first-place finishes from Taylor DeBever (Denver, Colo.), Brianne Dwyer (Hicksville, N.Y.) and Molly Smith (Belmont, Mass.), the Bulldog women added another big victory to their resume as they defeated the Minutewomen, 123.5-119.5. Now a 23-time winner, Ostrander set pool records in the 100 free (51.87), 50 back (27.78) and set both a school and pool record in winning the 50 free with a time of 23.50.
DeBever's victory in the 500 free (5:08.96) broke her own pool record and she also won the 100 back (1:00.10) and finished third in the 200 free (1:55.80). Dwyer put together one of her best meets of the season, winning her first event of the year by touching the wall with a time of 30.46 in the 50 breast. She topped off her meet with a second-place finish in the 100 breast (1:10.05) and helped the 200 medley relay team to a victory and a new pool record.
The 100 breast was the Bulldogs strongest showings of the meet as Smith, Dwyer andAlexandra Morreale (Short Hills, N.J.) finished 1-2-3. Mara Valenzuela (Bridgewater, N.J.) and Abby Whittaker (Salisbury, Mass.) finishes 2-3 in the 50 fly and Kaitlin Buckley (Duxbury, Mass.) earned a third-place finish in the 50 back.
On the men's side, UMass cruised to a 153-88 victory over the Bulldogs. Leading the way for the Bulldogs was the duo of Alex Kosenski (Lavallette, N.J.) and Nicholas Karadimas (New Milford, Conn.). Swimming the 500 free for the first time all season, Kosenski finished second with a time of 4:51.01. He also finished second in the 200 free (1:43.92) and helped the 200 free relay to a second-place finish. Karadimas won the 50 fly (23.69), finished second in the 50 fly (21.89), third in the 100 IM (55.14) and was a part of the 200 free relay.
The Bulldogs also got strong showings from Graham Beck (Danvers, Mass.) and Cameron Hessler (Southbury, Conn.). Beck finished third in the 500 free (4:54.71), second in the 50 breast (27.58) and second in the 100 breast (1:01.71). Hessler earned a second-place finish in the 50 back (26.18) and fourth in the 100 back (57.08). John Lawson (Bernardsville, N.J.) earned third-place finishes in the 100 fly and the 100 back, and Tim McGrath (Hyannis, Mass.) finished third in the 50 free and 200 free.
Both the men and women are back in action tomorrow as they travel to Stony Brook, N.Y., to take on the Seawolves 1:00 p.m.
