Roadrunners shut down Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday, 4-0
April 14, 2012HAMMOND, La. - Pitchers Haylee Staton and Alyssa Vordenbaum combined to one-hit Southeastern Louisiana, while senior Nikki Goff hit a two-run homer and tied a season-high with 3 RBIs to help UTSA defeat the Lady Lions 4-0 on Saturday at North Oak Park.
Staton (9-5) allowed just one hit in four innings to pick up her team-leading ninth win of the season and Vordenbaum struck out four in three frames for her first save. Sophomore Siera Sproul added an RBI-single and classmate Molly Fichtner went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Roadrunners (17-21, 7-5 SLC). With the loss, Southeastern Louisiana fell to 9-29 overall and 2-10 in league play.
Both teams were held without a hit until Fichtner led off the top of the third with a base hit up the middle that was followed by a single by freshman Megan Low. A sacrifice bunt from senior Caitlyn Ivy moved both runners over before Goff gave UTSA a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly to right.
Katie Doyle opened the bottom of the fourth with the Lady Lions’ only hit, a single up the middle, but Staton retired the next three batters to end the inning.
The lead doubled to 2-0 in the sixth after freshman Courtney Buchman hit a leadoff single and scored on Sproul’s two-out RBI-hit to left. Before Vordenbaum could finish the save in the seventh, Low opened the top of the inning with a walk and scored on Goff’s two-run blast to left field, her fourth homer of the season, that provided the final 4-0 margin.
After earning the victory over the Roadrunners last night, Kenna Terry entered the game in relief of Southeastern Louisiana starter Vicki Honeycutt. Honeycutt did not allow a hit, but walked four in 1.1 innings. Terry, who came into today with a 3-0 record and 0.67 ERA in three starts against the Roadrunners, fell to 3-13 after surrendering four runs on six hits in 5.2 frames.
UTSA will be back in action on Tuesday at Roadrunner Field, where they will host Houston Baptist in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
