Men and women sweep duel meets at Hurricane Festival

TULSA, Okla.- The Oklahoma State men’s and women’s cross country teams started the 2012 season by dominating the field at the Hurricane Festival in Tulsa this morning.  

The No. 2 Cowboys won their duel meets, going 4-0. The No. 24 Cowgirls swept the field as well, going 5-0.  

The Cowboys swept the top seven spots in the four-mile race with junior Taylor Monaghan winning the individual title in 20:35 to better his time of 21:01 and 10th-place finish in the same meet a year ago.  

Redshirt freshmen Brian Gohlke, Justin Vilhauer and Tommy Casey finished directly behind Monaghan in second, third and fourth-place, respectively. All three crossed the finish line together in 20:36.  

Sophomores David Osborn, Kevin Colón and Nick Thorp rounded out the top seven all crossing the finish line together in 20:37.

“I thought we had seven or eight guys that ran great and competed very well,” said head coach Dave Smith. “Those are guys that have a shot to make our top 10 and compete on the conference team. Running together like that was really encouraging to me. It’s a real strength of the program and a strength for the rest of the season.”

The Cowgirls were just as impressive; taking five of the top 10 finishes. Junior Victoria Hanna led the way for the Pokes, finishing fourth in 11:19. That time tied her personal best, which ranks her eighth in the OSU two-mile record books.  

Redshirt freshman Janelle Martinez finished fifth in 11:20 and senior Kate Kujawa finished sixth in 11:26.  

Freshman Adela Hofmannova and Jackie Campos rounded out the top 10, with Hofmannova eighth in 11:33 and Campos 10th in 11:35.

“We rested four of our top six or seven and the girls who ran, ran exceptionally well, competed well and won the meet,” said Smith. “Undefeated for the men and the women is a good way to start. "

Both teams return to action September 29 when they compete in the Cowboy Jamboree, held at the OSU Cross Country Course in Stillwater.
